As part of the government's objective to make Indonesia more investment-friendly, different types of visas and residency permits, depending on the activities carried out in the country, are available to foreigners wishing to come to Bali.
Free visit visa Indonesia has exempted citizens of 169 countries from visa requirements. Citizens of those countries are eligible to enter and remain in Indonesia without a visa for a maximum of 30 days. The Visa exemption facility cannot be extended or changed into another type of permit. Please note that due to the Covid-19 pandemic Visa Free Entry are suspended, except for 9 Asian countries, until further notice.
The visa on arrival is for foreigners (61 nationalities are entitled to VoA) who want to make a short visit to Indonesia. It is valid for 30 days but can be extended for another 30 days. Its price is USD $35 for the first 30 days. The Free Visit Visa and VoA cannot be used to work in Indonesia. In the scope of your business development, you can only use it to carry out pre-investment activities; conduct business interviews; make purchases of goods; give lectures or attend seminars; participate in international exhibitions; participate in meetings held with the head office or representatives in Indonesia.
The government issues business visas for those visiting the country for normal business activities, but their visit does not involve taking up employment or paid work. There are 2 types of business visas:
- A Single-Entry Business
Visa This visa is valid for a maximum stay of 60 days but can be extended up to 4 times on a monthly basis (total maximum stay of 6 months). It is useful for buying trips, negotiations and consultations.
- A Multiple Entry Business Visa
This visa is valid for 12 months and is more convenient if you have to travel to Indonesia on a frequent basis. You may enter and leave Indonesia at any point of time within the 12-month period, but you are required to leave the country every 2 months, which is the maximum stay permitted. It is issued by the Indonesian embassy in your country with the authorization of the Immigration Office in Indonesia.
When applying for a business visa, your business counterparts/sponsors in Indonesia must apply locally on your behalf.
The KITAS is issued to foreign nationals who want to work for an Indonesian company or organization. A KITAS is valid for a maximum of 2 years and can be extended.
- Investor KITAS
An Investor KITAS is a visa specifically designed for business investors in Indonesia, allowing them to live and manage their business within the country with relative ease. By setting up a PT PMA (Perseroan Terbatas Penanaman Modal Asing in Bahasa Indonesia), or a foreign invested limited liability company, a foreigner can invest and conduct commercial activities that generate revenue in Indonesia. For information about setting up a PT PMA, please refer our blog: Setting Up A PT PMA in Indonesia.
Based on the new regulation, to be eligible for the Investor KITAS, a shareholder has to commit to a paid-up capital of at least IDR 10 B per person, equivalent to USD $650K, in the Articles of Associations (AoAs) of their company. To comply with the new regulations, the company's capital must be increased so that the value of the shares you hold is equivalent to at least IDR 10 billion. This change requires an update of the company's legal documentation, before December 31, 2024. Average cost of an Investor KITAS is IDR 20 M per person for 2 years.
- Working KITAS
To obtain a Working KITAS, your employer must obtain a working permit – I.e. IMTA, for you from the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower. Average cost of a Working KITAS is IDR 30 M per person per year, which is considerably more expensive than the IDR 20 million for two years of Investor KITAS.
After 4 years under an Investor KITAS or 5 years under a Working KITAS, sponsored by the same company you can request a KITAP, which is the Permanent Residence Permit for 5 years.
